Pediatric Neurosurgery Department — KCIH Rawalpindi

Expert Brain & Spine Surgery for Children at KCIH

KCIH Pediatric Neurosurgery Department is Rawalpindi’s specialist centre for surgical and non-surgical management of neurological conditions in children. Our consultant pediatric neurosurgeon provides expert care for infants, children, and adolescents with conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system — from birth defects and tumors to hydrocephalus, epilepsy, and traumatic injuries.

Children’s neurological conditions require a specialist who understands the developing brain and nervous system. Adult neurosurgical approaches are not appropriate for growing children — the anatomy, physiology, and long-term implications are completely different. At KCIH Rawalpindi, our neurosurgeon is trained specifically in pediatric neurosurgery and works in close collaboration with our pediatric medicine, PICU, and NICU teams to ensure every child receives the safest, most precisely tailored care possible.

Whether your child was born with a spinal abnormality, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, or has experienced a head injury, KCIH neurosurgery team delivers evidence-based, compassionate care — backed by the full infrastructure of Rawalpindi’s most complete children’s hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions

What neurological conditions does KCIH treat in children?

KCIH’s Pediatric Neurosurgery Department treats hydrocephalus, brain tumors, spina bifida, craniosynostosis, tethered cord syndrome, Chiari malformation, arachnoid cysts, epilepsy (drug-resistant), traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord conditions. Both surgical and non-surgical management is provided based on the child’s specific diagnosis.

Hydrocephalus is a condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up in the brain’s ventricles, increasing pressure. It is common in premature babies and children with neural tube defects. At KCIH, our neurosurgeon treats hydrocephalus with VP shunt placement (a small tube that drains the fluid) or endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), a minimally invasive procedure. Regular follow-up is provided to monitor shunt function.

Yes. Spina bifida (myelomeningocele) is typically identified before birth or immediately after delivery. Early surgical repair — ideally within 24–72 hours of birth — reduces the risk of infection and further neurological damage. KCIH’s neurosurgeon works alongside our NICU and neonatology team to manage these complex newborn cases, with surgery performed in our fully equipped pediatric operation theater.

Pediatric brain surgery at KCIH is performed by a consultant neurosurgeon trained specifically in child neurosurgery. All procedures are supported by our pediatric anesthesia team and conducted in our dedicated pediatric operating theater. Post-operative care is provided in our on-site PICU, where children are closely monitored by our intensive care team until stable. Safety protocols are followed at every stage.

There is no minimum age for neurosurgery at KCIH. We perform procedures on premature newborns, infants, toddlers, and children up to 18 years of age. Newborns with spina bifida or hydrocephalus may require surgery within hours of birth. Our NICU and neurosurgery team coordinate immediately for such urgent cases.
